Are Roadkills Density-Dependent? Case Study of the Barn Owl (Tyto alba)

چکیده

Even though birds are some of the most common road-killed animals, it remains to be determined whether avian roadkills related breeding numbers and success, mainly due a lack study areas that monitor populations roadkills. We studied barn owl success monitored yearly (2174 attempts 1682 adults ringed) (9380 nestlings 95 km roads weekly for from 2009 2017 in Beit Shean Emek Yizreel Valleys, Israel. During period, we documented 1073 owls, which 328 were ring recoveries. The highest mortality occurred between July September, coinciding with post-fledging period. number pairs ringed positively total roadkill, proportion roadkill recoveries, recovered first year their life. First-year owls represent majority accounting 64.6%, while adult compose 35.4%. Notably, substantial fraction encompassing 67.2%, may pertain floaters since did not observe these individuals as adults. more females found male/female recoveries was similar at nest boxes. This is shows density-dependent demonstrate importance monitoring population studies.

Evolutionary conservation of Kv3.1 in the barn owl Tyto alba.

For prey capture in the dark, the barn owl Tyto alba has evolved into an auditory specialist with an exquisite capability of sound localization. Adaptations include asymmetrical ears, enlarged auditory processing centers, the utilization of minute interaural time differences, and phase locking along the entire hearing range up to 10 kHz. Adaptations on the molecular level have not yet been inve...

Barn owl (Tyto alba) siblings vocally negotiate resources.

Current theory proposes that nestlings beg to signal hunger level to parents honestly, or that siblings compete by escalating begging to attract the attention of parents. Although begging is assumed to be directed at parents, barn owl (Tyto alba) nestlings vocalize in the presence but also in the absence of the parents. Applying the theory of asymmetrical contests we experimentally tested three...

The influence of hatching order on the thermo- regulatory behaviour of barn owl Tyto alba nestlings

Adult birds maintain high body temperature in cold environments by the insulating properties of their plumage, particular behaviours such as huddling and communal roosting (Ancel et al. 1997), and a high capacity for thermogenesis. In nestlings, the capacity for thermoregulation is limited by constraints specific to young organisms. For example, compared to adults, chicks have a less favourable...

Growth and food requirement ̄exibility in captive chicks of the European barn owl (Tyto alba)

The growth and the food requirements of the European barn owl (Tyto alba) were studied in three groups of captive chicks. One group of chicks, raised in ad libitum food conditions by their parents, was used to measure body mass and linear growth of a number of structural body components at their characteristic growth rate. A second group of chicks, hand-raised with food ad libitum until ̄edging...
